You'll need patience and a good eye, but the payoff is real.
• Holala! Plaza (Placa Castella 2) - the city's vintage institution, from around 45 euros. This place has been a Barcelona staple for years. It's curated, but not precious. You'll find a mix of European and American pieces, from 1940s clip-ons to 1980s Memphis-style earrings. The staff know their stock. Ask them what came in that week.
• Lullaby Vintage (Carrer de la Riera Baixa 22) - small, sharp, well edited, from around 60 euros. This is where you go when you want something specific: a Victorian brooch, a 1950s cocktail ring, a single Art Deco earring. The owner has a refined eye and prices accordingly, but the quality is consistently high. You're paying for the edit, and it's worth it.
• Els Encants Market (Carrer dels Castillejos 158) - early mornings, everything under the sun, from around 90 euros. This is Barcelona's oldest flea market, a sprawling, chaotic wonderland. Go on Monday or Friday morning, before the crowds. You'll find dealers with trays of old Spanish jewellery, some of it unpolished, some of it needing repair. Bring cash and be ready to haggle. The starting price is always negotiable.

Go early in the week, when the rails are full and the staff still have time to talk. On a Tuesday at 10am, you might have the shop to yourself, and that's when the best pieces come out from the back.

What to Look For

Look for hallmarks inside the band or on the clasp. A stamped 9ct, 14k or 925 is your proof. In Spain, you'll also see the maker's mark, a tiny symbol that identifies the workshop. If you see a hallmark, you know the piece is at least gold or silver plated. If you don't, be cautious. The absence of a hallmark doesn't always mean fake. Older pieces might have worn it away, but it's a red flag.

Cameos should be carved shell or stone, which feels cool and slightly translucent at the edges. Moulded resin does not. Hold it up to the light. A real cameo will show the striations of the shell, the subtle variation in colour. Resin is uniform, plastic, dead. Also check the back. A real cameo is usually hollowed out to make the carving thinner, so it's lighter than you'd expect.

Test a clasp before buying. A worn spring ring is a cheap fix, but a broken hinge on an old brooch rarely is. That little C-clasp on a Victorian brooch, if it's bent, can't be fixed without a jeweller's torch. And a broken jump ring on a chain? That's a five-minute repair. Know the difference.

Before you buy, wear it for ten minutes. Walk, sit, reach for a shelf. A piece of vintage jewellery that only works standing still is not going to survive your actual life. That chunky gold chain, does it catch on your collar? That cameo pin, does it scratch the table when you lean forward? You'll know in a minute of wear.
