Issey Miyake
Issey Miyake (1938–2022) was a pioneering Japanese fashion designer known for his innovative textile technology, sculptural silhouettes, and fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. After studying graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo and later at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, he worked under Guy Laroche and Givenchy before returning to Tokyo to found the Miyake Design Studio in 1970. His debut Paris collection in 1973 challenged traditional Western tailoring with pleating, draping, and unconventional materials. In the 1980s, he introduced the iconic Pleats Please line, revolutionizing garment construction through heat-set pleating. His A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) project, launched in 1999, used computer-generated knitting to create seamless garments from a single thread. Miyake's work is celebrated for its blend of art, technology, and wearability, influencing generations of designers. He received numerous awards, including the Praemium Imperiale and the Order of the Rising Sun. His brand continues under his design philosophy, with a focus on innovation and functionality.
