Midweek mornings are when the new stock is out and the sellers aren't rushed.

This is where you find the deadstock 1985 Air Jordan 1s, the ones with the swoosh that swoops just right. The staff know what they have, and they price it like it. But if you want a pair of vintage Adidas Gazelles in a rare colorway, this is the place. Be prepared to spend, and don't expect a deal. You're paying for curation and authenticity.
• Beacon's Closet (74 Guernsey Street, Brooklyn) — resale done properly, good turnover, from around $60. The sneaker rack is small but constantly changing. I've seen 1980s Reebok Classics and 1990s Fila Disruptors here, all in decent shape. The staff are not sneakerheads, so you can sometimes find a gem underpriced. But check everything carefully; they don't authenticate, so you have to.
• Chelsea Flea Market (West 25th Street) — weekends, bring cash and haggle politely, from around $90. The vendors know what they have, but they also want to move inventory. I watched a guy talk a pair of 1970s Puma Suedes down from $120 to $80 because he pointed out a slight sole separation. Cash is king here. Haggle with a smile, and you'll do fine.

What to Look For

Press the midsole with a thumb. If it crumbles or feels chalky, the foam has gone and no amount of style will save it. This is the death knell for vintage sneakers. The polyurethane foam used in the 1980s and 1990s breaks down over time, regardless of wear. Check the glue line at the toe for lifting. If the sole is peeling away, it's a red flag. Look inside at the heel for a date stamp. Many shoes from the 1980s have a production date printed on the heel label or insole. This helps you date the shoe and assess its age. Deadstock is lovely but old glue fails, so shoes that have been worn a little often last longer. A worn pair has already proven its structural integrity. The exception is if the shoes were stored in a climate-controlled environment, but that's rare in the wild.

The sneaker boom of the 1980s was a New York story. Run-DMC wore Adidas Shell Toes without laces, and the Bronx made them iconic.
