Early Vintage Hans Wegner Wishbone Oak Chair. CH-24 CARL HANSEN & SON DENMARK 66

Early Vintage Hans Wegner Wishbone Oak Chair. CH-24 CARL HANSEN & SON DENMARK 66

🪑 Chairs · 1940s–70s

The edit · Chairs

A pre-owned Wishbone chair in oak, made for Carl Hansen. A mid-century chair is the fastest way to change a room, and the originals were built from solid timber and honest joinery rather than flat-pack.

The Carl Hansen mark is the line that separates a licensed piece from a later homage. Turn it over before you fall for the silhouette.

The master of the chair.

Hans J. Wegner designed more than 500 chairs over a lifetime, most for the Danish workshop he called home. His Wishbone chair of 1949 has been in continuous production since 1950.

Wegner is the most collected name in Danish mid-century design. The Wishbone, the Round Chair and the Papa Bear are trophies, and original 1950s and 1960s examples are scarce.

Why it's called that

Wishbone Chair

Hans Wegner's CH24 got its nickname from the Y-shaped backrest. Designed in 1949, it has been in continuous production at Carl Hansen since 1950.

What to look for

The maker's stamp, usually Carl Hansen or PP Mobler, and the joinery. A genuine piece shows crisp mortise-and-tenon joints and a paper cord seat that has aged evenly.

Sit in it, then look underneath. Loose joints are fixable, but a cracked shell or bent frame isn't worth the trouble.

How to place it

Let one statement chair sit against a neutral room, or recover a tired shell in good wool and let the frame show.
