The edit · Watches

A used Breitling Navitimer watch in black gold. A mechanical watch from these decades was built to be repaired, not replaced. Patina on the dial and a bracelet softened to the wrist are earned, not defects.

The pilot's instrument.

Founded in Switzerland in 1884 by Leon Breitling. The Navitimer of 1952, with its slide-rule bezel, became the definitive pilot's chronograph.

Vintage Breitlings, especially the Navitimer and the Chronomat, are collected for their oversized cases and aviation tooling. The 1960s models are the sweet spot.

Why it's called that

Breitling Navitimer

Breitling built the Navitimer in 1952 for pilots. The name is a contraction of 'navigation timer': a slide-rule bezel let a pilot calculate fuel and course mid-flight.

What to look for

The bezel is key on a Navitimer: it should turn cleanly with a proper slide-rule scale. Check the calibre and the dial for period-correct printing.

Check the case back and movement markings, and whether the crown winds cleanly. A service history doubles the value of any mechanical watch.

How to wear it

Keep the case small and swap the strap. A 34 to 36mm dial under a shirt cuff reads far more deliberate than anything oversized.
