A used Eames Lounge chair in leather. A mid-century chair is the fastest way to change a room, and the originals were built from solid timber and honest joinery rather than flat-pack.

Charles and Ray Eames, husband and wife, transformed furniture from the 1940s onward, pioneering moulded plywood and fibreglass. The Lounge Chair of 1956 became the most famous chair of the century.
Original Eames pieces are the backbone of the mid-century market. The Lounge Chair, the LCW and the fibreglass shell chairs are blue-chip, and the market only climbs.
Why it's called that
Eames Lounge Chair
Charles and Ray Eames designed it in 1956. Charles wanted a chair with 'the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt'. The lounge chair and ottoman became the most copied chair of the twentieth century.
What to look for
Labels, patent numbers and the Herman Miller or Vitra mark. Original fibreglass has a woven texture and visible fibres that modern reproductions smooth over.
Sit in it, then look underneath. Loose joints are fixable, but a cracked shell or bent frame isn't worth the trouble.
How to place it
Let one statement chair sit against a neutral room, or recover a tired shell in good wool and let the frame show.
