Founded as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 and renamed Nike in 1971 after the Greek goddess of victory. The Air Jordan 1 of 1985 turned the sneaker into a collectible.
Vintage Nikes from the 1980s and 1990s, especially Air Jordans and Dunks, are a booming collector market. Deadstock pairs trade like assets.
Why it's called that
Nike Air Jordan 1
The Air Jordan 1, from 1985, was Michael Jordan's first signature shoe. The NBA banned its black-and-red colourway, and Nike turned the fine into advertising.
What to look for
The size tag, the date code and the glue. Cracking midsoles and crumbling foam are the killers, while yellowed soles can be restored.
Selvedge edges, chain-stitched hems and real fades made by a body, not a factory. Raw denim shrinks, so know your measurements.
How to wear it
Let them sit at the natural waist and hem them to a raw edge. Pair heavy denim with something soft, a fine knit or a silk shirt.
