A used Gucci Bamboo bag in gold leather. The originals are still out there, and they hold up better than anything new. A bag from this era was designed to be carried, not photographed, and it shows in the hardware and the stitching.

Gucci's bamboo handle was born of wartime rationing in 1947, when leather was scarce and Florentine craftsmen bent bamboo over a flame instead.

What to look for

Look for the stamped serial and the quality of the bamboo, which should be hand-bent with visible heat marks. Older GG canvas has a depth that modern printing lacks.

Look at the corners, hardware and lining. Real bags age at the stress points first, so a worn corner is often a good sign, not a flaw.
