Founded in New York in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany as a stationery and fancy goods store. It became the great American jeweller, and its 1886 six-prong Tiffany setting changed engagement rings forever.
Tiffany silver, from Paloma Picasso to Elsa Peretti, and its vintage jewellery are collected worldwide. A blue box is still shorthand for the real thing.
What to look for
The stamp is everything: Tiffany & Co., the metal mark, and often a year or maker's mark. Peretti and Picasso pieces should carry their signature.
Hallmarks tell the story. A clear maker's mark or metal stamp is worth more than a pretty setting, so turn the piece over before you fall for it.
How to wear it
One heavy piece beats three delicate ones. Mix gold with silver deliberately, and pin a brooch to a lapel slightly higher than feels natural.
