A pre-owned leather jacket. A leather jacket is the rare piece that looks better the longer you own it. Vintage ones arrive already broken in, the collar softened and the cuffs scuffed in the best way.
The couturier who put women in tuxedos.
Founded in Paris in 1961 by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge. Le Smoking, the women's tuxedo, in 1966, and the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line changed fashion permanently.
Vintage YSL spans the Rive Gauche era to the Mondrian dress and the Sac de Jour. The 1970s and 1980s pieces are the most collected, and the craftsmanship is superb.
What to look for
Labels tell the era: Yves Saint Laurent, Rive Gauche, then Saint Laurent. Check the lining and the hardware; the older the label, the finer the finish.
Weight is everything. A dense, supple hide that's already broken in will outlast anything new, so check the lining seams and the zip teeth.
How to wear it
Keep the rest plain. A white tee, straight-leg jeans and boots. Size up rather than down, and try it over a slip dress to see it differently.
