Pair Of Panton Vitra Junior S Chairs

Pair Of Panton Vitra Junior S Chairs

Used🛋️ Furniture · 1950s–70s

The edit · Furniture

A used set of two Panton pieces of furniture, made for Vitra. Old furniture was built before flat-pack, with dovetail joints and solid wood you can still smell. It was made to be passed on, not replaced.

This listing is a set of two, not a single piece of furniture. Matching pieces from the same workshop sit together the way a lone example never can.

The Vitra mark is the line that separates a licensed piece from a later homage. Turn it over before you fall for the silhouette.

One continuous curve, no legs bolted on.

Verner Panton's 1960 chair was the first single-piece moulded plastic chair, one continuous S-curve. It took years of development with Vitra before it could be mass-produced.

The Panton chair is the icon of 1960s space-age design. Early fibreglass examples are the most prized, and original vivid colours are far rarer than the black reissues.

Why it's called that

Panton Chair

Verner Panton's 1960 chair was the first single-piece moulded plastic chair: one continuous S-curve, no legs bolted on.

What to look for

The moulding and the underside. Early fibreglass chairs show a rough, woven texture, while later polypropylene is smooth. Check for a Vitra or Herman Miller mark.

Dovetail joints and solid wood, never veneer over particleboard. A maker's stamp on the underside is the strongest sign of a real piece.

How to place it

Mix one vintage piece with the modern and let the patina show. A maker's stamp on the underside is the strongest sign of the real thing.
