Mies van der Rohe Knoll Barcelona Table Stainless Steel Base 3/4" Glass Top

Mies van der Rohe Knoll Barcelona Table Stainless Steel Base 3/4" Glass Top

🛋️ Furniture · 1950s–70s

The edit · Furniture

A pre-owned piece of furniture in steel, made for Knoll. Old furniture was built before flat-pack, with dovetail joints and solid wood you can still smell. It was made to be passed on, not replaced.

The Knoll mark is the line that separates a licensed piece from a later homage. Turn it over before you fall for the silhouette.

The company that brought modernism to the office.

Founded in New York in 1938 by Hans Knoll, with Florence Knoll shaping its aesthetic. Knoll produced the work of Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia and Marcel Breuer, and licensed the Charles Pollock Executive Chair from 1963.

A Knoll label is a guarantee of a licensed original. Pieces like the Barcelona Chair, the Tulip Chair, the Bertoia Diamond and the Pollock chair are the most collected of the era.

What to look for

The Knoll label and the designer's signature, usually under the seat. Original leather and chrome patina in a way that marks the real thing, and early Pollock chairs carry their 1963 date.

Dovetail joints and solid wood, never veneer over particleboard. A maker's stamp on the underside is the strongest sign of a real piece.

How to place it

Mix one vintage piece with the modern and let the patina show. A maker's stamp on the underside is the strongest sign of the real thing.
