Issey Miyake

1970s-2000s · JP

Issey Miyake, born in Hiroshima in 1938, launched his eponymous label in Paris in 1970 before moving to Tokyo. He revolutionized fashion with his 1980s 'Pleats Please' line, using heat-set pleating to create garments that move with the body. His 1989 collaboration with choreographer William Forsythe and the 1993 debut of his iconic 'A-POC' (A Piece of Cloth) manufacturing process redefined how clothes are made—single pieces of fabric cut with zero waste. Miyake’s 1998 'Flying Saucer' dress and his 2016 exhibition at the National Art Center, Tokyo, cemented his legacy as a master of fabric technology and sculptural form.
