Although there has always been an appreciation for the superior quality, fabric and design found in vintage clothing, an awareness of this excellence, the demand for this clothing and its acceptance has increased dramatically since the early 1990s. Thrifter’s heaven, Parisian style.
This “beaux p’tit magasin” tucked in the back of Montmartre houses not only a breathtaking collection of old French classics (beautifully knitted Sonia Rykiel dresses, shoulder-padded Christian Lacroix 2-piece suits, and wide-legged Ann Demeulemeester pants were just a few of the gems spotted on a quick rummage), but also boasts far more modest prices relative to the “vintage” and “consignment” stores stateside. The Parisians appreciate that what they are selling are, in essence, second-hand clothes, and I, in essence, appreciate that.
The 2 ladies who own and run the shop are endearingly sweet, and after watching me stumble through a few minutes of broken French conversation, finally asked me whether I was “anglais” (to my immense relief) and pointed me towards some “encroyable” skirts and “des ceintures tres uniques” that I might like.
I ran away with a gold-buttoned red tartan blazer (because everyone needs one) and a gorgeous studded black belt for a mere 50 euros. And with a warm, fuzzy Parisian feeling inside.
