Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was a French fashion designer and founder of the Chanel brand. She is known for her influence on modern fashion, and her signature style is still popular today. Chanel was born in Saumur, France, in 1883 and spent much of her early life in an orphanage in Aubazine. She later worked as a seamstress and singer, and eventually opened a shop in Paris called Chanel Modes.
Chanel’s designs were revolutionary for the time, as she rejected the corsets and restrictive clothing that was fashionable at the turn of the 20th century. Instead, she favored simple, comfortable clothing made from jersey fabric, which was typically used for men’s undergarments. She also introduced the concept of the “little black dress,” which became a staple in women’s wardrobes.
Chanel’s shop and her fashion designs became popular among the elite in Paris, and she eventually opened a shop on rue Cambon in Paris, which became the center of her fashion empire. Chanel continued to design and create new fashion collections until her death in 1971, and the Chanel brand is still one of the most prestigious and influential fashion brands in the world today.
